In 1995, after working in the environmental remediation business since 1972 for state government and several companies, I decided to go into business for myself. I had a vision for the entity I was kicking off, had developed a business plan, had arranged for financing and even had some business lined up. I had not, however, selected a name for the company.
I wanted a name that matched the extreme customer-centered philosophy that I wanted to bring to the marketplace. We found the company name in an unlikely place.
Over a hundred years ago Herman Melville and other American writers, poets and painters spent time in an area around a deep gorge in the Hudson River Valley in upstate New York called Katterskill Clove. While there, he experienced silent sunrises, roaring waterfalls and soaring eagles. In chapter ninety-six of his epic Moby Dick, he wrote about the eagles of the Catskill Mountains.
“And there is a Catskill eagle in some souls that can alike dive down into the blackest gorges, and soar out of them again and become invisible in the sunny spaces. And even if he for ever flies within the gorge, that gorge is in the mountains; so that even in his lowest swoop the mountain eagle is still higher than other birds upon the plain, even though they soar.”
Catskill strives to provide service to you, our customer that perfectly meets your needs. While we can’t always be perfect, we believe that even when, like the Catskill eagle, we “swoop” our service will remain exceptional because we are approaching your project from the highest possible standard.
